Climate Change Speaker Training
This intensive one-day course gives participants the text, information, skills and confidence to prepare and deliver a persuasive half hour talk on climate change.
‘Exceptionally useful training that gave me the structure, foundation and clarity to speak to groups’
Alexis Garnaut-Miller, Corporate Wellness
Who is the course for?
Since 2005, over 1000 people have attended the Speaker Training Programme. It is especially well suited for people who want to talk about climate change within a peer group - for example within a workplace team, in the local community or in council meetings and other local democratic forums.
What happens in the workshop?
Participants are guided through a template talk on the causes, impacts and solutions to climate change then work in pairs and small groups to find their own language and practice their presentation.
Through role-plays participants explore what qualities make a good (and bad) public speaker. New speakers will gain the confidence that they can speak powerfully without being a scientific expert by talking of their own experiences, hopes and fears. Seasoned speakers will obtain new skills for communicating more effectively. The training also includes advice on dealing with sceptics and ‘difficult’ audiences.
COIN offers ongoing support, providing template talk worksheets and an information pack with pull-out factsheets and recommended further sources. The highly interactive format of the training also helps participants to meet, share ideas and form lasting contacts.
