Talking Climate launched!

Talking Climate is a new initiative to provide a gateway to research on climate change communication.

There is a great deal of research on climate change communication . But too often this valuable knowledge doesn’t reach the people who need it most: climate change communicators. At the same time, researchers are often unaware of how to promote their work beyond academic journals.

Project Assistant needed for Defending Rights

Would you like the opportunity to work for the UK’s first coalition on climate change and migration issues?

Dedicated to raising awareness about the human rights impacts of climate change, COIN runs a programme of work on migration and climate change. In March 2011, COIN launched the UK Climate Migration Coalition. UKCCMC is a young alliance of NGOs united by concern about the lack of any long term strategies to support, assist and protect people at risk of displacement linked to climate change.

We are recruiting a Project Assistant to support the Project Manager on a wide variety of tasks from research and campaign planning to event management and web support.

For more information and how to apply, see our employment page.

COIN 2010-11 Annual Report

COIN's latest Annual Report for 2010-11 is now available.  As Cliff Jordan, the Chair of Trustees says, the last year has been a particularly challenging one with various external and internal factors, so it is inspiring to see a compilation of how much we have achieved, with a small staff and tight resources.  We continue to learn and to act.

This year we've changed the format, putting together a colourful A3 poster showing all our different activities.  You can download the full report or just the poster here, or email info@coinet.org.uk if you would like a copy.

Internship opportunity: event coordination

Want to make a difference to climate change and have a flair for events management?

We are currently looking for an organised student/graduate to co-ordinate and help our new Speaker Series. The Speaker Series is a programme of events that COIN is introducing to initiate interest around climate change debates and to prompt further action around the issues. The events intern will work closely with staff and provide support in all aspects of event organisation, including arranging venues, organising publicity and co-ordinating speakers and event itineraries.

For more information and how to apply, see our employment page.

UK Government Foresight findings - an initial response from Defending Rights Project Manager, Hannah Smith

The UK Government’s Foresight Team has released findings of a two year project on global environmental change and migration. With 350 experts contributing to the 200 page report, Environmental Change: Future Challenges and Opportunities  is a weighty contribution to the existing evidence base. What’s clear is that environmental change is influencing migration patterns and that a failure to recognise this puts significant numbers at risk of displacement, or of becoming ‘trapped’. Too little attention is paid to those who do not have the resources to move. This is a useful reminder that we must not forget those who remain in environmental vulnerable areas.

Climate Change & Migration: Should we be planning for human movement? EVENT SERIES

UKCCMC, a project led by COIN and funded with the generous support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation are delighted to announce a new four part event series.

Climate change & Migration: Should we planning for human movement aims to stimulate thought and discussion accross the refugee, humanitarian, development, peace building  and environmental sectors on the displacement dimensions of environmental change. From film screenings to policy breakfasts we hope there are opportunites for everyone to get involved.

VIDEO: Hannah attempts to demystify climate related migration in 8 minutes...

Described as ‘bringing a fresh perspective on a crucial issue’

Hannah attempts to dispell some of the key myths that exist on this issue and warns that unless we we reclaim space for rational debate we are unlikely to secure justice for those affected.

Filmed recently at Green Talk 2011 you can watch the vid online here: http://green-talk.info/films/do-climate-refugees-exist/

Inspired by TED, Green Talk takes the same approach to sharing ideas with a global audience - short talks, given in-front of a live audience, filmed and made available for free on-line.

NEST/NYTH design up for award

The Cardiff Design Festival has announced that Nest/Nyth - Making Wales Cosy logo has been nominated for The Best of Welsh Design Awards.
